9 January - Leatherhead - Abinger Hammer

Day 9

Riders: Andy, Al, Raph, Simon, Loren, Daz, Katie B, Grant, Danny, Helen, Kate, Lin
Bikes: Ironhorse MKIII Elite x2, Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp - All black with a subtle bit of gold and red nipples, Lapierre 514 & Lapierre Zesty 314, Cannondale RUSH carbon team w/lefty fork, Bontrager, Kona Cadabra and more to come.
Train: 9.32am from Waterloo - Leatherhead.
Location: Leatherhead - Abinger Hammer - Leatherhead
Conditions: Gloopy and wet, but topped with blues skies
Total Mileage: 32miles
Route: To be confirmed - Lin (Tom Tom) was ride leader and showed remarkable tolerance and just about managed to keep everyone in check.
Food: Morning: This is what I ate - the others were not so restrained (I will mention no names) Tea, (chocolate twist, latte on the train). We stopped at the Volunteer for our lunch www.the-volunteer.co.uk, I indulged in slow roast pork belly and veg, coffee. The Volunteer is under new management, so we were keen to try out the food. It was good and they served large portions. One note though, the only hosepipe we could find wasn't working, so don't go expecting a bike wash. Evening: Tuna & Broccoli, Baileys, 2 choc biscuits - bad i know.
Mechanicals: (3) 1. First of the day was Danny - he had a puncture before we even got out of the car park. 2. There seemed to be a lot of chain-suck - Simon, Grant, Al and myself were suffering from it - really not helpful when you are trying to go uphill to be honest. 3. On attempting to push through the chain-suck on the start of a long climb my chain snapped and i had to walk to top before i could gather some help. Help came in the shape of Katie and Lin, without whose expertise and equipment I would have been stuffed.
